Costa Rica Eco Tourism Attractions

Costa Rica Eco Tourism Attractions

Arenal Volcano

Costa Rica Eco-Tourism Attractions

What is eco tourism?

The philosophy behind ecotourism, also known as "sustainable tourism" or "ethical travel" is to preserve natural resources, while creating economic opportunities for the country. Some of the finest attractions for eco-tourists are located in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica.

Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano

Any itinerary for a vacation in Costa Rica vacation must include Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano. Lake Arenal is a picturesque man-made lake – the largest in Costa Rica – surrounded by rolling hills, with Arenal Volcano reflected in the surface of its waters. The warm winds from the Caribbean whip the lakes into whitecaps, providing one of the world's best wind-surfing destinations. The Lake Arenal area is easily reached from La Fortuna or via Tilaran from the Pan American Highway and offers hotels, lodges and resorts for all budgets.

While in Costa Rica, don't miss out on a chance to see one of the most active volcanoes in the world. In 1968, the previously slumbering volcano burst into life, creating a massive earthquake and fiery lava flow that devastated several villages, including Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacon.  Explosions and eruptions occur almost daily, but cloud cover is frequent, so there is no guarantee of a spectacular show on any given day. However, the perfect conical volcano is impressive any time. The Arenal Volcano National Park protects 12 life zones and 16 protected reserves surrounding the volcano.

Hotel Arenal Paraiso

Hotel Paraiso

One of the finest places to enjoy the majestic view of the Arenal Volcano is the Hotel Arenal Paraiso, located just west of La Fortuna. Surrounded by lush, exotic gardens, this peaceful spot provides spectacular birdwatching opportunities and exotic wildlife. A volcano-view swimming pool and 65 acres of private reserve add to the charm of the Hotel Arenal Paraiso. For adrenaline seekers, a flight through the jungle canopy on a zipline is a must. The Arenal Paraiso Canopy tour offers twelve platforms connected by 35 meters of cable threading their way through the Arenal river canyon. At heights of 85 meters, spectacular views of the rainforest and waterfalls are guaranteed.

Monteverde Cloud Forrest

Eruption of Arenal Volcano

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

Considered one of the most outstanding wildlife sanctuaries in the tropics, this 11,000 hectare reserve is also one of the most popular attractions in Costa Rica. Located just 4 miles southeast of the Santa Elena cloud forest, this reserve protects more than 100 species of wildlife, 2,500 species of plants (300 orchid species alone!) and 1200 species of reptile and amphibian species. Nine hiking trails afford close-up viewing of this diverse wonderland. To fully enjoy this feast of flora and fauna, a guide is recommended.

Buena Vista Lodge

Buena Vista Lodge

Buena Vista Lodge and Adventure Center
Located in the scenic foothills at the base of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, this 2000 acre private reserve is made up of primary and secondary rainforest.

Dedicated to protection and reforestation of the rainforest, this remote mountain property offers gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and the Guanacaste landscape. The natural thermal waters and hot springs are created by Las Pailas volcano, one of five active volcanoes in the region of Rincon del la Vieja. Whether hiking in the National Park or on guided tour on horseback, you will have ample opportunity to enjoy the rich abundance of wildlife, spectacular flora, cascading waterfalls and a magnificent variety of exotic birds. The Buena Vista Lodge offers 77 cozy, comfortable rooms in rustic cabins made of natural materials. All rooms feature private bath and hot water, but don't look for TVs and telephones in this remote spot. Bar and restaurant service is available.
