Costa Rica Sportfishing

ERA Broker Kevin and daughter Tiffany

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is divided in three major fishing areas: Northern, Central, and Southern.  Flamingo-Brasilito is located at the heart of the best fishing area in Central America:  the Northern Pacific.

A completely new Marina at Playa Flamingo is going to be built shortly. The Master Plan and Regulatory Plan are ready and bidders are now being invited to participate. It will feature large commercial and residential areas, over 200 slips and will be able to accommodate mega yachts. This full-service Marina will certainly be the major sportfishing center in Costa Rica.

Fishing conditions are generally seasonal.  However, in the Northern Pacific region of Costa Rica, the rocky nature of the coast offers a wide variety of catch, year around, because the rocky substrate is also present offshore.

A local hotspot is the Catalina Islands, a few nautical miles offshore from Flamingo and just 20 minutes away. Further north the Murcielagos, a big chain of islets is only 90 minutes away from Flamingo and provides extensive habitat for snappers, roosterfish, world record wahoo’s and amberjacks.

The blue water off the north Pacific coast is very productive: you’ll find all of the three species of swordfish, some weighting up to 900 pounds. It’s habitat for yellow fin tuna that frequently weigh over 200 pounds.  Marlins can be found offshore year around with a peak in late August. Sailfish can be caught all year also, but the peak season typically runs, from May through August.

Another year round resident is the Dorado, a.k.a. Mahi-Mahi.  These are strong fighting fish that are fun to catch and absolutely delicious to eat!

There are many charter boat operators to choose from in the Flamingo-Tamarindo area. The fishing charters rates for a full day are between $1,000.00 and $2,000.00 per boat and include outstanding lunches, baskets of fresh local fruit, ice cold beer, soda and bottled water, transportation to an from your hotel. Half day trips cost from $350 to $700, depending on the type of boat you charter.

Don’t forget to bring your camera, especially video camera since the most rewarding experience is to hook, catch and release a marlin or sailfish.
